Excerpt from "Pen Pals"
"It is a cool fall morning in mid-October, the leaves outside my window are beginning to fall. This was the time of year my mother used to insist I’d put on a jacket before going to the mailbox to grab her monthly magazine. Today I make the short trek down my driveway wrapped in my polka-dotted robe, feeling sentimental. My slippers crunch a few leaves.
I open my mailbox, finding only a few pieces of junk mail. A bill or two. I shuffle back up to the house, clutching my robe to my bare chest. My mother would’ve called me too bold for this but I find much of my boldness is born out of laziness.
Inside, I shuffle through the mail and recycle the bits of useless trash. My cat, Juniper, watches lazily from his perch on the windowsill, licking his white little toes. Sometimes I wish I got mail, like way back when, when people would send each other letters or little treats.
Maybe I should get a pen pal, I think to myself but dismiss the notion quickly. My life is very boring, what would I even write to them about?
Bang bang bang.
There’s a sharp wrap at my door and I jump, startled, my robe opening slightly."
